Addressing Four OSW Pillars in Smaller and Rural Communities

In March 2020, the OSW Group convened to discuss law enforcement safety and wellness challenges that are unique to small and rural agencies—an essential conversation given that approximately 80 percent of U.S. law enforcement agencies have fewer than 20 officers. This meeting focused on addressing safety and tactical care via training and proper equipment; promoting physical health through testing, regular wellness visits, and fitness resources; and supporting mental wellness with confidential counseling, peer support groups, and other innovative and unconventional resources. Overall, the goal was to identify best practices, discuss research, and share strategies to improve holistic wellness for officers. The meeting participants also clearly highlighted several ways in which leadership should promote wellness among their staff.

4 Ways Officers Can Improve Neighborhood Relationships

A police chief discuss four ways police officers can improve their relationships with the communities they are involved with. The article advises that police officers live in the communities they serve, engage with members of the community when they are not on duty, volunteer, and do their research about the communities they live in. Engaging with these steps is crucial for changing public perception about police officers.

2024 National Forensic Science Week

National Forensic Science Week (September 15-21, 2024) recognizes the contribution that forensic science makes to the criminal justice system. It is an opportunity to celebrate academic programs, forensic professionals, and scientific research in the various forensic disciplines. ASPIRE teamed up with the Forensic Technology Center of Excellence (FTCOE) to engage with the community to highlight alternative law enforcement career paths such as sworn forensic scientists.

Jaclynn McKay is a Research Forensic Scientist at RTI and previously worked as a crime scene investigator in South Carolina. For National Forensic Science Week, she shares her journey and advice for those considering a similar job.

Louisiana State Police Criminal Investigator Alison Casanova has decades of experience working in forensics. She shares her favorite part about working in forensics.

Broward County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Investigator Roberto Caceres has been a Forensic Field Training Detective since 2014 and was also one of the lead forensic investigators during the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School mass shooting in 2018. He shared with ASPIRE the impact being Hispanic has on his career.
